I took a trip to Los Angeles with my family for my cousins wedding this summer. I was last there in November and I was excited to go back since there were a lot of things I didnt get to do on my last trip.
One of the places I got scolded for not trying was Zankou Chicken. Zankou Chicken is a popular chicken chain in Los Angeles started by an Armenian family from Lebanon. Since my mom is an Armenian born in Lebanon, she was eager to try it as well, so it was the first place we went to eat once we landed.
Zankou Chicken features typical middle eastern type preparations for chicken and beef, like shawarma, kebabs etc, served with middle eastern sides like tabule, hummus, roasted tomatoes and pickled beets. But the secret to their success is their garlic sauce. You get a small container with every order and it is the perfect complement to the food (you can see it on the right side of the picture). It was even featured on an episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate (with Garlic) on the Food Network. Duff Goldman, from Ace of Cakes named it as his favourite garlic dish. :)
Anyways, I actually order the chicken kebab sandwich, but they screwed up my order and gave me a whole plate instead. Either way, each plate comes served with warm pita bread, so it was close enough...
My favourite part, besides the garlic sauce was the pickled beets. They are this funky pink florescent colour, but I love them, especially with middle eastern food like this.
The entire dish was great, with the marinated chicken, and the hummus and the warm bread. I would definitely recommend it to those in the LA area. You wont be disappointed. MmmmMmmm, I cant wait to go back to the West coast, the thought of it is making me hungry!
