Workout routines

So I was looking at this article to get ideas of workout methods. I noticed that this is a pre-workout idea of doing some abs before the morning run. What I was wondering was on the exercise in the picture. I heard that doing ab curls like shown can stress the neck and back. That it is better to either lock your legs under a couch, or crossing your arms similar to like a mummy. It helps from pulling unnaturally on your neck and doesn`t cause pain. Any ideas on this topic?
