The town of Vila Real is situated about 450 meters on the right bank of the river Corgo, a tributary of the Douro. It is located on a plateau surrounded by high mountains, the mountains that loom Marão and Alvão.
This crater is about 85 miles as the crow flies, from the Atlantic Ocean that lies to the west, 15 kilometers of the river Douro, which flows south, and north, about 65 kilometers from the border with Galicia, Spain.
Vila Real is the county seat and capital.
The Municipality of Vila Real, without prejudice to the urban feature of the headquarters, maintains rural characteristics well marked. Two types of landscape dominate: the area most of the Serra do Marão and Alvão separated the land green and fertile valley of the Champion, and to the south, with the proximity of the Douro, the terraced vineyards. Everywhere there are water lines that supply the area of the County, especially the Corgo River, which traverses the city in a small but deep valley, resulting in a canon of unusual beauty.
