My friend`s mum bought this for me to try at Yummy Market. Yummy Market is a Russian supermarket in Toronto.
After she heard that I`ve never tried Turkish Delight before, she made it her mission to feed authentic Turkish Delight to me.
The whole discussion actually stemmed from my friend and I talking about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We were talking about how in elementary school, we were both forced to read the book and I was always fascinated with Turkish Delight.
I always thought it was a special type of chocolate covered in sugar frosting from the description in the book. Personally, I thought it was an extremely delicacy, like the chocolate was made with a special nut.
And then I found out, Turkish Delight was actually starch and sugar with rose water made into a gelatinous formation. The box she bought me that was mostly nut flavors, hazelnut, pistachio and coconut (though coconut is more like a fruit) so I tried them all.
After trying them, I realized I didn`t like them. I think its because I didn`t like the taste of the rose water and that it was very sweet. I did enjoy the texture though. The coconut one was my favorite because it tasted like pudding =) The ones made with nuts was okay though, though it was overly sweet and eating both a jelly like candy with crunchy nuts was a bit odd. I preferred just the jelly like candy.
Have you guys tried Turkish Delight?
