In the premiere episode of "The Pauly D Project" tonight, we got more Pauly, but also more of his ambitions. He`d like to DJ in Vegas, pursue his influence beyond "Jersey Shore," and he wants to care of his family.
"I never went as far as you went," his dad says to his champ. At his mother`s house, she narrates a photo of kid Pauly with a toy harmonica in his mouth.
"You were beatin` that beat from early on," she smiles.
When Pauly gets a call for a trial DJ run at the Palms, the plot gets moving.
But most of all, his spinoff is about "a guy and his boys." If anyone remembers the confection that was "Entourage," which at its end played like Cosmo for men a high-end soap it`s not all that different.
Just insert the blowout, a (fair) few extra pounds and subtract some sunshine because part of this is filmed in Rhode Island, where they all live before leaving on any number of planes to embark upon their travelogue. They get the giant hotel suites with the jacuzzi pools, the girls, and one of them even has a girlfriend. Who looks like a girl off "Entourage." (He`s more than a little bigger than Turtle when he was bigger, though).
Though Pauly sweats about his trial in Vegas, all he has to do is get the crowd moving, which is probably not as hard for him as it would be for someone else, given the fact that he`s so known. We don`t even hear his DJ set all that much (licenses required?), except when it goes silent because of some electrical mixup. This is the main conflict of the episode ... not that Pauly`s dad recently suffered a stroke, though that lays some kind of foundation for something that also matters to him. No worries. His mentor, DJ Biggie (the one with the girlfriend), is on the case. He`s the grownup-type oneAnd so, the friends take their roles: Big Jerry, from Jersey, the one who scares off a girl when she`s in the hot tub, merely by entering it; Ryan, the one that has yet to explode his temper later in the season (or so it seems) and Jason, the newbie to the group from Vegas who calls himself J-Roc (and does what Jerry calls an "open-palm fist pump") and looks a tad uncomfortable yet satisfied ... that his wardrobe is put together?
Anyway, Pauly gets the Vegas residency (was that before or after MTV greenlit this pilot?).
Most enthusiastic "Yeah, buddy!" of his life. His eyes pop out of his head like Roger Rabbit. The expression almost matches the hyperbole that is his hair ... almost.
When they take a celebratory trip back to the place they all met, a club in Providence back East, Pauly DJs, again, and the hands of the crowd go up, again. The leader of this entourage is as happy as ever. And so this show will continue unless something tragic happens. There`s even what looks to be a marriage proposal (the one with the girlfriend).
So far, not much drama. But as Pauly takes a meeting with 50 Cent, and Britney Spears lapdances him while on tour, things might become more ... scenic.
