The Green Bay Packers have a tough road ahead of them on Monday Night in Seattle, and we`ll go into the keys of winning that game a little more on gameday, but for now, as you look at the schedule, it`s clear this is a game it would behoove the Packers to win to avoid digging an early hole in the NFC North.
After the Seattle trip, Green Bay has games against New Orleans at home and Indianapolis on the road. These are winnable enoughI don`t think the Saints` problems are going away anytime soon and further assume the Colts` win last week was more about the fact the opponent was the Vikings. But after that comes a Sunday Night game in Houston and all signs are pointing to the Texans being one of the best teams in the league (my preseason prognosis has this game as a Super Bowl preview). Hence, Green Bay will have to win either at Seattle or at Houston to avoid a 3-3 start.
The possibility of the Packers splitting their first six games are contrasted with the fact Detroit has a couple winnable games ahead of them. The Lions are at Tennessee on Sunday and I don`t know if anyone knows what`s going on with the Titans and their complete inability to run the ball. Whatever it is, they have shown zero evidence of being ready to win an NFL game against anyone, much less Detroit. The Lions then host Minnesota, so everything is all lined up for Detroit to start 3-1 and grab an early lead in the division.
Green Bay has both games against Detroit ahead, and Chicago has a difficult trip to Dallas next week, so I`m not attempting to imply the NFC North crown is on the line. But the early part of the season is about positioning and trying to avoid must-win spots in November and if you treat that as the goal, then the importance of the Packers` first road game on Monday Night in Seattle takes on further importance.
Furthermore, if we look beyond the NFC North, this game carries arguably even more importance. Seattle and Arizona both have the look of teams who will be in the playoff hunt and the presence of San Francisco in the NFC West mean the Seahawks and Cardinals would be in the wild-card picture. A win on Monday Night gives the Packers` a tiebreaker edge over Seattle and also helps against Arizona, as common opponents is a key tiebreaker.
