The most recent book I read was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. Being from Finland, I`ve heard a lot about Larsson since he`s a Swedish writer. I`ve already read the Finnish translation of the book, so I decided to give the English translation a try!
I`m not going to give much away of the plot, but it`s basically a thriller including a mysterious disappearance of a young woman. She`s been missing since the 60`s and everybody assumes she`s dead. A retired CEO of the Vanger Company calls a journalist to investigate the case. This is supposedly the plot that you`d think would be the main point of the book, but things get way more complicated. READ IT YOURSELF TO LEARN MORE!
It`s definitely a more complicated read, including a lot of business terminology. The translation is AWFUL in some parts and definitely gives an English reader a different view than a Swedish reader. For example, the Swedish title of the book is "Män som hatar kvinnor" which translates into "Men who hate women". This title really describes the theme of the book, and I really hate the translator for changing it into "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", which really has no significance at all.
This novel is definitely not a happy little read, but it`s for sure a book I`d recommend. The realistic picture the book gives really makes you think about society and it`s unspoken flaws. Including violent rape scenes and misogyny, I would not say it`s for people under the age of 16.
I love how it`s a trilogy, and I look forward to reading the sequels!
P.S. Check out the Swedish movies made out of this book. They`re way better than the Hollywood version that came out a little while ago. You can find them on Netflix!
