Hey everyone! I made tamales for the first time the other day and I must say it came out preeeeeeeetttty good! Especially since I`m chinese and I made it vegetarian as well! Of course it`s not as authentic as you find in Mexico or someones Abuelita`s house, but I came close! I just googled some recipes and tweaked them a little. I have a lot of vegetarian friends so I experimented with the filling.

I used:
4 cups masa harina (mexican corn meal)
1 1/4 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp Valentino (mexican hot sauce) to give it extra flavor
4-5 cups broth (you can use water)

First, soak corn husks in warm water for 30 minutes prior. Whip the shortening and add in the masa, salt, baking powder, Valentino. Then you can add in the liquid. The dough should be light and moist enough for you to spread on a corn husk. you can test the dough if you drop a small ball of it into a cup of water. If it floats, then it`s ready!

Soy protein (you can use morning star crumbles, cheese, beans, peppers, chicken, pork, beef, etc)
Taco seasoning
Chipotle in adobo
cumin (optional)
green chiles

Cook and season until desired taste.

I make mine more traditional so they`re not as small as the one you see on the website. Steam the tamales for 1 hour 15 minutes or until the husk is easily removed from the tamale. hopefully you like it!
