Sweetheart Pastry

One of my favourite types of Chinese pastry is called laopo bing or Wife/Sweetheart cake. It`s more widely known in the Southern part of China, especially in Hongkong and Macau. I`m not too sure where it originated from but it`s now often marketed as Macau`s specialty.

My mom recently came back from Hongkong. Knowing that I love this sweetheart cake, she bought some of these in the airport and brought them back for me. The crust of the pastry is a little salty and the texture is exactly what it looks like. The filling is supposed to be made out of mainly winter melon and a mixture of other things. It tastes sweet. Before looking up the ingredients of the filling, I totally couldn`t tell what the filling was made out of just by eating them. I ate 3 on the first day that my mom brought them back. I`m pretty sure they are at least 300 calories per cake but I just don`t care because I love them so much.
