"Nian Gao" is one of the Chinese New Year foods that we have to eat as it symbolizes a better and prosperous year. According to Wikepedia, " This sticky sweet snack was believed to be an offering to the Kitchen God, with the aim that his mouth will be stuck with the sticky cake, so that he can`t badmouth the human`s family to the God of all Gods (Yu Huang Da Di).
There are a few ways of cooking `nian gao` and one of my favorite ways of eating it is coating the sticky cake in shredded coconut with a little salt added to it. It is a nice balance of salty, sweet and sticky dessert. There are also others who prefer pan frying the nian gao as they like the gooey sweet texture.
