Wide receiver Steve Smith reportedly told Cam Newton to "Grow up" in a profanity laced intervention with the star quarterback. The conversation took place in the Carolina Panthers blowout 36-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Apparently Newton was pouting after being pulled from the embarrassing loss.
The Carolina Panthers were poised to join the ranks of playoff contenders with an upset of the banged up New York Giants. Well Eli Manning and company had other plans and exposed the Panthers in Cam Newton`s first nationally televised NFL start.
Eli Manning threw for 288 yards and a touchdown as journeyman running back Andre Brown ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns against the hapless Panthers defense. Ramses Barden stepped up big time for the injured receivers who missed the game. Barden caught nine passes for 138 yards.
Cam Newton completed 16 of 30 passes for 242 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions and visibly pouted. The cameras showed him ignoring quarterback`s coach Mike Shula on the sideline.
What really ticked off a lot of Carolina Panthers fans was Cam Newton`s touchdown celebration after a quarterback sneak. With the team losing badly Newton did his Superman routine and lost some fan support.
On WFNZ Charlotte sports talk radio Cam Newton was slammed all day by callers as was Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney. Steve Smith was praised by callers for calling Newton out on his behavior and for refusing to leave the game when substitutions were made.
Marc James a co-host of "The Drive" (with Taylor Zarzour) on WFNZ repeatedly called Cam Newton a punk for the touchdown celebration and for ignoring Coach Shula. He even said he was temped to wish the team had RG3 or Andrew Luck instead of Cam Newton.
This game has led to renewed calls by fans for Marty Hurney to be fired by Panthers owner Jerry Richardson. The Panthers invested heavily in running backs and linebackers while ignoring the offensive and defensive lines which played terribly in the loss to the Giants. Fans are also blasting Ryan Kalil again for his add claiming a Super Bowl win this year, in the Charlotte Observer.
This loss could be a season breaker for the Carolina Panthers or it could cause them to circle the wagons and play lights out the rest of the season. Carolina has some extra time to prepare for their visit to Atlanta in week four. Please check back here soon for a preview of that game.
