If you are like me, you have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring and the glorious cool and sunny weather that comes with it. Peplum, Floral, Pastels, and Prints - the 4 Ps every fashion girl needs to incorporate into her spring wardrobe.
Much like the spring flowers, the one hem line that is sure imitate life through art is the peplum hem. A peplum hem is a piece of fabric attached to the waist or bottom hem to give the form fitting shape flare. The fluttery flare addition increases elegance and can make the most structured and fitted piece, fun. Its flattering on all shapes, if youre curvy, it can hide curves or if you are looking to increase your curves, a peplum hem can give the illusion of hips. Brands like Forever 21 to Philip Lim offer awesome tops, dresses, skirts, dresses and coats with the peplum hem.
Mint green, soft pink, & pale yellow; no this is not a segue into Easter egg colors, but colors you should be wearing this spring! Pastels are perfect for spring time and are a long way from the dark opaque colors that filled wardrobes everywhere! If you are not exactly sure how to wear a pastel top, look to designers such as Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, and Miu Miu who wear all over the pastel trend for their S/S 2012 lines.
Hudson Jeans has a pair of really great soft green jeans that would look great with a soft pink silk collard shirt and nude heels, or paired with a chunky light gray sweater and gray ankle boots. If an entire pastel outfit does not work for you, try incorporating one color in at a time into your look.
Abstract, geometric, stripes, and polka dots prints are almost as good as a sale! While most women shy away from prints in fear of unflattering figures, Balenciaga, Celine and the inexpensive Marni for H&M welcomes bold prints! The standard printed dress of top is featured in all three of these designers collections, but its the pants and dare I say, jumpsuits that are making prints perfect for the season. One way to wear a printed pant or jumpsuit is to pair it with a solid color blazer and or simple shoe and minimal accessories.
Aside from our fashion spring trend of prints, floral anything is must have. A far cry from the awful floral legging trend a few seasons ago, floral pants and jackets are so spring! Big bright flowers are just the feminine touch my wardrobe needs to recuperate after the androgynous faze I went through during winter. Diane von Furstenberg created some very chic and completely wearable and affordable floral print dresses that fit in with the spring trends.
No matter the trend make sure that what you wear fits your style and flatters your body type, however do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Taking a risk just might get you photographed by the amazing Bill Cunningham!
