Spice Cake For New Years Eve

So I made a spice cake for New Years 2011. I made this cake for New Years Eve due to the fact I had planned to make it for Thanksgiving but low and behold my Mom had went to the store and bought 2 pies and I had made another cake so we didn`t need all that sweet stuff for one holiday. And for Christmas last year we had some fancy store bought cookies in a huge platter from Costco which lasted us forever. They were so good. But this cake was pretty good too. As I usually do not go anywhere for New Years Eve the past several years I decided to just celebrate it at home like always. This turned out very good, and everyone else thought so too. It was plain, but different. I didn`t frost it either, cause I thought why frost it when sometimes plain is enough. I think the taste is yummy. I didn`t make it from scratch though. My bad. I had a mix that I had purchased from the dollar store but it was a well known brand name so I figured it can`t be that bad. (Yes dollar stores sometimes do sell name brand items!) I think I`ll make a more fancier dessert next time but this one was still one of the best I have made. But my question is have you ever made a spice cake before and how did it turn out? Do you think I should have went a fancier route or is plain just fine?
