My parents and sister were away for a few weeks, leaving just me and my brother at home.
It gave me an opportunity to try some new dishes and ideas at home since my brother is a perfect test subject - he`s the least picky eater in the house lol.
One thing I have always been curious to try is Spaghetti Squash.
If you have never heard of spaghetti squash, it is unique because after you cook it, the insides tend to form small strands that resemble noodles.
While they taste similar to squash, you can pretty much dress them like spaghetti.
It is a little tricky to cook for the first time, since I wasn`t sure how to go about it.
You can choose to cook it whole, or cut it in half and bake it in the oven. The skin is very tough before it is cooked, making it hard to cut in half, but it is worth is since you speed up the cooking time as well! It also gives you a chance to clean out the seeds ahead of time and add some flavour while it cooks. You would also need to peirce some holes for steam to escape if you cook it whole.
I decided to cut it in half, and scoop out the seeds before lightly oiling the inside. I also added some salt, pepper and cayenne. I then laid the halves on a cookie sheet and cooked for about 40 minutes at 400F.
After taking it out of the oven, I let it cool for a few minutes before using a clean cloth to handle. You need to run a fork along the inside where they will separate into the `spaghetti` strands.
Once you have gotten to that point you can dress it whichever way you like.
I just heated up some marinara sauce that I added my own flavours to, and served it over top.
The biggest problem I found with the spaghetti squash, was that it didn`t yield enough food. One spaghetti squash wasn`t enough for both my brother and me. If I plan on making this for my family, I would need a few squash, and still need to fortify it with a protein and some other sides.
It was certainly an interesting experience to make and eat, but not something I would go out of my way to make again.
Have you ever had spaghetti squash before? What is your favourite way to eat it?
