Okay so there will be a new princess in town. Disney has released a statement saying that they had just added their first Latina princess. Her name is Sofia and is a mixed heritage girl living in a fairy-tale world. Her mother, who is from a kingdom called Galdiz, which is inspired by Spain married a king who hailed from another kingdom inspired by Scandinavia. It is called Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess and it will premiere on November 18. And if all goes well, they will continue it with a tv series on Disney Channel and Disney Junior.
Even though this concept is great, they`re getting a lot of slack for this character because she doesn`t look Latina enough. She has fair skin, auburn hair, and light eyes, instead of the stereotypical darker features. I understand where people are coming from, but I think one of Disney reps mentioned that Sofia was inspired by the (current) Queen Sofia of Spain and her granddaughter.
I think the idea and concept of making the princesses more diverse is beautiful. This isn`t the first ethnic princess Disney featured also. We have Jasmine from Aladdin: Persian/Middle Eastern, Pocahontas: Native American(lead role), Mulan: Chinese(lead role), Meg from Hercules: Greek, Tiana from The Princess and the Frog: African American, and Merida from Brave: Scottish, who is unique herself having red hair & freckles. Its pretty cool that they`re stepping up their game. I not exactly sure if Sofia is an `actual` princess because it seems like they gravitating to the younger pre-school kids. So, maybe in the future they might add a more `Latina` looking princess. Who knows?
What do you guys think about Princess Sofia? Do you think she looks "Latina" enough?
