Growing up in Northern Virginia, yards are very small. We were lucky enough to have .25 acre but most lots were .2 or less. Our front yard (up to the sidewalk) was maybe 15 feet. Our backyard, because of the luck of the lot size, was fairly large for the area, flat, and fairly spacious. That said, a LOT of people had much, much, smaller yards. There were cute "cottage" homes where the 1-2 car garage was in the back yard (if they had one), accessible by an alley behind the homes. Same with a really cute, victorian style of town home. The backyards in each, especially the town home, was really small. But a design like this would make those small yards dream-worthy and attainable.
