I think that a lot of people out there don`t understand the real importance of sleep because I was one of them. There are so many reasons why you shouldn`t be staying up at night. We should be getting at least 6 hours of sleep a day, but 8 is best. Try not to sleep over 9 hours because there are negative side effects to that too. Hopefully you`ll think twice about sleeping in on weekends now because it increases your risks to getting certain diseases.
The advantages to getting 6-8 hours of sleep are that it you concentrate in school, puts you in a better mood, helps you maintain your weight, helps your skin complexion, etc. The list goes on and on. However, if you really are a busy person, you can catch up on sleep through naps. I like to sleep on the car a lot if i`m extremely tired. If you`re like me and is often tired no matter how much sleep you get, you might have anemia which is when you have a lack of iron. It`s usually genetic and it runs in my family. Just take a blood test to check, and if you do have it, take iron supplements.
Now here is where the real advice comes in. If you have a big test the next day, don`t stay up till 2am in the morning studying because at that point, your brain will barely be functioning and you`ll be retaining very little information. Instead, sleep early and wake up early. As cliche as that may sound, it works. I used to think to myself, I can`t possibly wake up at 4 or 5am to study. But really, at school, you feel so much better. Your mind set determines whether or not you will be able to. If you say that the test is just a small one and you don`t need to study when that alarm clock finally goes off, then you won`t wake up. If it`s an important exam, you`ll force yourself to get up but once you`re up, you`ll be wide awake. I`ve been influencing my friends to do so, and so far, it`s been working for them. Just give it a try and maybe one day you`ll be thankful you did (:
All these tips are things I`ve researched when I was assigned to doing a paper on sleep. However, the advice on when to sleep and wake up is from personal experience. Thank you for reading if you got this far<3
