So I watched The Secret of the Kells this morning and I wanted to write a review.
I stole a synopsis from IMDB: Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. But a new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from the isle of Iona carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way.
So there`s the premise of the movie. I was kind of excited to watch this movie because freakin` Irish accents! And also because the premise sounded really fun. Though the movie held my attention and I wanted to watch all the way through, I didn`t love it.
First off, the animation really bugged me. So much of it was incredibly simplistic and almost made you feel like you were watching a comic book that was moving. I will say though, that the trees and patterns in the movie were VERY cool. They really put some Celtic shapes and styles into it.
The other thing I really didn`t like was the ending. I won`t spoil anything for you, but it didn`t seem to resolve or finish anything. It didn`t seem like an open ending either, just something that would happen maybe three quarters of the way through the movie.
Okay, I know it`s basically a children`s movie, but it was nominated for Best Animated Picture at the Oscars...and I`m basically a child.
Anyway, there`s my brief, weird review of Secret of the Kells.
