A little over a month ago my husband came home and told me about this sandwich the bistro at his job created. I had never heard of pretzel bread (call me crazy). Ever since then I have had it in the back of my mind that if I spotted any at the grocery I would pick some up to make sandwiches at home. Today while at the grocery I was in the bakery section looking for French rolls and spotted a bag of pretzel rolls! I scooped them up and bought them, no hesitation.
I ended up making something super simple. It is just the pretzel bread, sliced open, and then layered inside with thin slices of salami. After trying the first bite, I ended up doubling the amount of salami that is shown here. The dough for the pretzel bread is much more dense than regular bread, so it overwhelmed the salami. My husband suggested next time I spread a bit of cream cheese on it. First of all, salami/cream cheese rolls are DELICIOUS, so it makes sense to combine it here. Second, I made awesome cheese balls (granted it isn`t done with salami, rather beef) and instead of using crackers, I always eat it with pretzels... so it makes double the sense (does THAT make sense, lol!) to use some cream cheese in the sandwich. I think I`ll do that next time I eat these.
The pretzel rolls are quite small, though, so I made 2 sandwiches. It was good. It was a fun spin on the typical salami sandwich I`d normally eat (just salami on wheat). The pretzel bread tastes spot on like a soft pretzel...they even put a tiny amount of sea salt over the top.
Have you eaten pretzel bread?
