About a month and a half ago, 8 `hairialist` performers fell during a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus show. These girls hang by their hair 30-40 feet in the air and twirl and perform acrobatically (my picture shows the rigging that they hang from - it lifts up into the air). A piece of equipment malfunctioned, however, and they plummeted to the ground during the performance, sending all of them to the hospital with critical injuries.
I originally reported on this story here on Luuux when it happened because I`ve spent time with Ringling and the people on the show are all like family. The show that the accident occurred during is the show I`ve spent the most time with and it was such a complete shock to the entire circus and performing community when this happened. Fortunately, all the performers survived and are now in stable condition, but many are still wheelchair-bound and it looks like one girl may never walk again. They`ve now also hired lawyers to look into the accident.
What I find very interesting about the lawsuit aspect is that it doesn`t appear as though Ringling will actually be sued - instead, it looks like the lawyers are going to go after either the equipment manufacturer or the arena itself where the accident occurred. Many of the girls are actually hoping to return to the circus and continue performing (though, for some, this will never be possible). I`m actually very glad the lawsuit looks to be heading in this direction, rather than placing blame on the circus itself.
Ultimately, I`m very, very glad the girls are recovering and that it looks like some justice will be served for them when the lawsuit is filed. The circus is such a family and an accident like this really shakes everyone`s hearts. I`m hoping the best for them and will be watching to see how the lawsuit pans out.
