Ever since I watched the trailer of this movie almost a year ago, in a cinema, I was fascinated by this story, even though I have never seen any of the Lord of the rings movies. I was just not into fantasy movies. But the trailer was so powerful (I couldnt get that song the dwarfs sang out of my head for weeks), that I couldnt wait for the movie to premier in the cinemas. It finally did, after one year of waiting, and I got the chance to see it in IMAX 3D, at 24 fps. This is a relative new concept, where there are 24 frames per second, instead of 12 per second. This adds more realistic feelings to the movie, which would be my only complaint about the movie: it was so high definition, so real, that it almost seemed like a documentary, not a movie, and it stole away a bit of the fantasy spirit for me.
Anyway, the story is so good (you guys already know it: A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.). I will not get into details, so I do not ruin it for you guys. In the end, I think it was a good idea to watch this movie first, before the LOTR films. Even though, I thing the Hobbit has 3 parts, and this one was only the first one. The next one will premiere all the way in 2015 :(
I think I have enough time to watch the LOTR ones until then.
Overall: good story, amazing special effects and scenery, highly recommend it in IMAX 3D. I literally became a LOTR fan.
