Review: The Descendents

I rented the movie The Descendents from Redbox last week and surprisingly I found it wasnt as disastrous as I thought it would be. From reading the description on Redbox, I added it to my movie cart kind of on a well, Id like something else to watch whim. I thought it was a drama, but my boyfriend pointed out that it also stated that it was a comedy. Okay, so, George Clooney is in it, hes a very good looking man, so what the heck, right? Right! The story was pretty up front from the start and as you watched it, it really sucked you in.

The general premise of the film centers around George Clooneys character, Matt, who is married, has two daughters, one in her teenage years, the other 10 years old. His wife is in a boating accident, which leaves her on life support in the hospital. Everything he knows is thrown into a tailspin and he has to reevaluate his life and how things are going in order to make it. Not financially hes very well situated, but emotionally, personally and he needs to mend his relationship with his daughters since the relationships are really on edge. Deciding to mend his relationship with his daughters first, he runs into issues, the 17-year old has pent up aggressions against her parents for them sending her off to boarding schools since shes always been a problem child. She kind of runs her dad, telling him what shes doing and whats going to happen and he stands around like an oaf just taking it. The 10 year old learns some of the bad behaviors from her sister and Matt is just left wrestling two unruly children who dont really respect him as a father. As more of the story unwinds, he begins to gain his childrens respect. Another issue Matt is dealing with is whether or not he should sell the land his family had passed down to him. There are trials and tribulations associated with that and an unruly father-in-law who thinks highly of his daughter and no one else. Little does his wifes father know, his daughter was anything less than innocent Matt learns from his eldest daughter that his wife was having an affair with another man around the time of the boating accident. The stress in his life builds and builds and he has to decide how he is ultimately going to deal with it all and he does, in his own way, and sometimes with the help of his children.

Overall, I would give this film 3 to 3.5 stars. It was a decent film, something to pass time, but it definitely wasnt one of those oh my GOD you have to see this movie! type of deals. If youre a George Clooney fan and you want something light on the brain to watch, go ahead and pick this up for yourself.
