Review: Cheap Cake Eyeliner

I`ve always wanted to try cake eyeliner but just couldn`t get myself to splurge on the Laura Mercier one. My staple eyeliner is MAC fluidline in Blacktrack, and I also have quite a few other really good black pencil liners. I didn`t see any reason to spend more money on a type of makeup item that I already seemed to have found the perfect one for.

But then...I really really wanted to experience cake eyeliners, so I did a little research on a cheaper alternative to Laura Mercier`s version. I was suprised to see how many alternatives I had. In the end, I chose the one made by a brand called "Kyrolan". Almost everyone who reviewed this cake liner raved about it, and I was able to find it on ebay for about $8.5 with S+H to Canada being $9. The seller even agreed to throw in a liner brush for free.

The package arrived in less than 2 weeks, which is pretty amazing speed for a regular USPS shipment to Canada. I only got a chance to try it this morning. The unique thing about cake liners, for those who don`t know, is that the brush needs to be wet in order to pick up pigment for the cake eyeliner pot. It took me a little while to figure out how much water to wet the brush with. I found that the free brush was too thin for my preferences. I have a really shaky hand and prefer to use big angled brushes to apply gel liners. Since it was taking me too long to apply the eyeliner using the thin brush, I decided to just try it with the angled brush. It worked just fine.

So after a whole day of running errands and standing in the rain, here is what I think of the Kryolan cake eyeliner. The staying power is fantastic. No smudging what so ever. I also have to mention that I have really sensitive eyes, and this cake eyeliner is the only one that did not bother my eyes at all, even when I tightlined. There was no dried particles falling out like the MAC fluidline, if applied a little too much. The cake liners just dries thin and flat. The only downside is that it might not be conveninent as water is required to wet the brush. Other than that, everything else is as good as it gets, in my opinion.

I also did a comparison photo of the cake eyeliner and the MAC fluidline in blacktrack. You can see that blacktrack is more of a intense black, while the Kryolan one is more natural.
