This here is a Puerto Rican Pasteles made with pork. I KNOW this does not look the most appetizing and at first I was like "What the hell is this?" but it`s actually pretty good -- that is, I do eat mine with a little hot sauce mixed with ketchup since it is made from plantains. There`s a woman in town who makes these, she sells a dozen for $20. I can see why she charges what she does because it`s certainly a lengthy process. She has to hand grate each plantain and it`s mixed with meat mixture - usually chicken, beef or pork. The mixture is then wrapped into a banana leave or wax paper, tied shut. You do have to boil them in order to eat them to cook the banana through. These particular pasteles are the pork variety.
I know the Goya brand of food sells the frozen version of these and I have tried those and they`re alright, but they are nothing compared to homemade ones. I have tried the beef version before but the pork is definitely the most flavorful, at least in my opinion.
Have you ever tried a pastelle?
