Banh Da Lon in other words is called "pig skin cake" because of the texture of the cake but it is not made out of pig what so ever! This is one of my top 3 Vietnamese desserts that I enjoy eating. This cake is made from tapioca starch, rice flour, mung beans (sometimes taro, durian) coconut milk, water and sugar. The texture of the cake is very jelly like and it`s super good: I especially love the one with mung beans. If you`re a fan of jelly and mung beans you`ll enjoy this dessert. You can easily find this at your local Vietnamese bakery or at an Asian Market for an affordable price. Make sure to touch the packaging for freshness, if it`s soft then it`s new.. if it`s hard then it`s old and don`t buy it!
In photo #2, #3 is mine and I purchased this to eat recently when I went to Santa Ana. I bought some banh da lon and for those few slices it was about $2.50. It was yummy and made fresh, I ate it all by myself.. something random is that I like to smell this cake before eating it, haha.. :)
Have you ever tried this cake before? If so, what did you think of it? If not, would you try this even though the translated name of this cake in English is kind of gross?
