American Idol` winner Phillip Phillips has been forced to delay urgent kidney surgery after being struck down with a sinus infection.
The 21-year-old was due to undergo an operation to remove huge stones in his right kidney, but TMZ reports that Phillips` sinus infection triggered a high fever, preventing surgeons from being able to operate safely on the popular singer songwriter.
After taking out the `Idol` title last week, Phillips revealed he has been suffering excruciating pain throughout the competition, and had put off the urgent surgery against doctors advice until his time on the reality show came to an end.
The operation requires a six-week recovery period, and the singing sensation - who has already had eight surgeries for the congenital condition - was determined to hold on.
"I`ve been sick this whole show," he said last week. "I`m trying to get all my work done, to recover."
Two months ago a stent was inserted into one of Phillips` kidneys - a temporary fix which caused the star a great deal of pain.
He missed several field productions due to his illness, including the shooting of Ford commercials which were reportedly "too taxing".
