I remember the first time my mil made these. I was like ummm what is that? No thanks.... lol but i sucked it up and tried it. To my surprise they are delicious!!! They are tamales but Nicaraguenses call them naca-tamales. Ive called them tamales before and my mil makes sure she corrects me. Now I just do it purposefully lol.
Unlike regular Mexican tamales this are made with the banana leaf instead of the corn husk and they wrap them up differently. To make sure they don`t open up while cooking they tie a string around them. They end up looking like a little package. When you open it up you`ll see the maize and rice. My mil uses chunks of pork, potatoes, sliced tomatoes, peas and yerba buena. At first it doesn`t look appealing but they are delicious!!!
