Senegal is home to a naturally occurring pink lake named Lake Retba, also known as Lac Rose. Because it has high salt content, much like the dead sea, it is ideal for micro-algae called dunaliella salina. If you didn`t make the connection already, it is the presence of the micro-algae that gives the like its pink lemonade look. Crazy, huh?
Don`t drink it, though! It may look like pink lemonade, but it really is super salty lake water. Look how cool biology is! Who would have known that water could be super pink and girly looking. I sure didn`t learn about this in school. I even did a project in French class about Senegal and nothing about the lake showed up during my research.
