I`ve heard a lot about the Ramen Burger and have been wanting to try it for awhile. The ramen burger is the brainchild of chef Keizo Shimamoto. The only way to get it at first was to wait on a two hour long line at Smorgasburg on Saturday`s. Then came their partnership with Dassara, a ramen joint on trendy Smith Street on Brooklyn.
At Dassara, they offered 50 ramen burgers each day and once they were sold old, they`re done for the day til the next day. This started on September 14th and continues until October 15th. I visited Dassara today, a rainy day quickly after work. I guess because I`m one of the last ones to try it, there was no crowd at Dassara. Or perhaps it`s the rainy weather or early dinner schedule that I chose. Anyway, I knew right away what I wanted to order but took in the atmosphere first. The place is small but with very cool decor. Some pop art mixed with Japanese/Asian icons and on the other wall hidden projectors display moving flower petals. The waitress that served me (the only one I saw around) was very nice. But as you can quickly discern, for a ramen place, there are no Asian employees around. Not in the kitchen which you can view from your seat or any of the other staff.
Besides the ramen burger which was $11 and came with chips I ordered an appetizer of Tebasaki Chicken Wings (Garlic marinated twice-fried chicken wings with black pepper seasoning) for $9. What was the verdict on the two? The wings was heavily spiced but with the tangy sauce provided they were delicious. Loads of flavor, it`s best eaten with some rice I believe. The ramen burger meanwhile was exactly as I expected but smaller. The burger patty with its herbs was delicious but the ramen bun was a miss for me. The bun was fairly tasteless like a rubbery oily thing that just took away the flavors from the patty.
Overall, I would say I would come back but not for the ramen burger. They have a lot of other interesting menu items that I would love to try such as the Xi`an Ramen.
Have you tried the ramen burger before?
