Movie Review: The Troll Hunter

My boyfriend and I decided to stay in and watch a movie tonight, and we settled on a Norwegian film called Troll Hunter (or Trolljegeren, in Norwegian). I don`t know if there are any dubbed versions of this film, but we watched it with English subtitles.

This movie is done in the style of a "mockumentary", in that it seems like a documentary, and that events are being filmed in real life as they happen, but it`s all 100% scripted. The plot is basically that a group of friends decide to investigate some strange incidents involving dead bears. Apparently, there is no reason for the bears to be showing up dead as frequently as they are, and it causes suspicion amongst the friends. They decide to pursue a mysterious man who appears to be tied to the killings, thinking that he will know what is going on, and will be able to tell them. He is resistant at first, but then tells them that trolls have been killing the bears, and that he is a troll hunter! They scoff at him at first, but then they are shown undeniable proof that trolls do exist. I`d continue with the storyline, but I don`t want to give too much away! ;)

I think that the premise of this movie was really interesting - I have certainly never seen a movie about trolls before, even with the rising popularity of films about supernatural creatures (including vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc). So, this film was definitely unique from the get-go. The pacing of the movie wasn`t the best, though. It seemed like it took a long time to lead up to certain major events. The movie was almost two hours long and and it simply did not need to be that long. However, when major events did occur, it was awesome! The special effects were truly amazing. The very end of the movie was the best, and made the rest of it well worth the wait. So, although there were parts where my attention wandered, I really did enjoy the action, when it did occur. :)

I would recommend this film to anyone that likes mockumentary-style films, and/or films about mythical creatures. I don`t feel like it was a scary film at all (it`s definitely a league apart from gory zombie flicks), though it was exciting. Overall, I`d give it a 7 out of 10!
