Moving on with my tour of must see mountains of North Carolina, we move on to Mount Craig. Essentially Mount Mitchell`s next door neighbor, Mount Craig also happens to be second tallest mountain in the Appalachians and the second tallest point east of the Mississippi River at 6,647 (about 2,026 m). So named after the North Carolina Governor who established the 1st State Park in the state, Mount Mitchell State Park, Locke Craig. Mount Craig is located in Yancey County, and can be reached using a couple trials that begin at the Mount Mitchel SP picnic area. Mount Craig encompass the same views and nearly the same height as Mount Mitchell. Like Mount Mitchell, Mount Craig has several picnic areas and a campground and several ranger stations. The trials that lead up to the top of the mountain also continue on to the other nearby mountains in the area. Like Mount Mitchell, Mount Craig is a very Family Friendly place and makes for a nice alternative or second visit site after going up Mount Mitchell. You and your family would enjoy it a lot.
