The impressive fortress of Mont Saint- Michel served as the seat of the monastery in the 8th century AD. Together with the surrounding bay area, Mont Saint- Michel, located in the region of Lower Normandy, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is truly like a city of its own. The castle is set on a rocky tidal island just one kilometre off the north-western coast of France, and whopping three million people visit Mont Saint- Michel each year.
