Michelle Obama has graced the cover of fashion bible Vogue twice, and caused clothing itemslike the J. Crew gloves, belt and fierce Reed Krakoff boots she wore to the presidential inaugurationto sell out in a matter of hours, but that doesn`t mean she`s a forward-thinking fashionista, according to Barneys Creative-Ambassador-at-Large Simon Doonan.
"She dresses appropriately," Doonan told the Huffington Post at an event at 92Y Tribeca in New York. "I don`t think of her as being chic."
Doonan was quick to clarify his comments, explaining Obama`s role as first lady inevitably cramps her style. "As a public servant you can never appear to be chic," he elaborated, pointing out that looking too stylish gives off the unflattering impression that someone cares too much about appearance. "You need to look kind."
He was also quick to mention Obama looks "breathtakingly beautiful" in person.
Nice save, Doonan! It`s never a good idea to get on the bad side of the leader of the free world`s wife.
What do you think? Does Michelle have a good sense of style?
