Mark Cuban Has High Hopes For O.J. Mayo

Maybe Mark Cuban really believes O.J. Mayo is the next star in a Dallas Mavericks` uniform. Or maybe he`s just saying that because he lost Jason Terry and Jason Kidd in the offseason.

Things to ponder, right?

Regardless of whether or not he truly believes Mayo can be the next big thing in Dallas, he had some positive words for the young shooting guard, according to Tim MacMahon of

"We went on the option for the big free agent. That didn`t work out. Honestly, that wasn`t my first choice," owner Mark Cuban said Monday. "Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don`t do and they lead to better things. And I think that`s what happened now."

Cuban went on.

"I think he can be a star," said Cuban, who insists he sees a long-term future for Mayo in Dallas. "And I think O.J. knows that this is his make-or-break, who-am-I-really-going-to-be-in-this-league year. Coach (Rick Carlisle) is going to give him that opportunity. We`ll see what happens."

Mayo came out of college with so much promise. His best year was his first year when he averaged 18.5 points per game. Since then, however, Mayo hasn`t been able to take that next step in his career.

Maybe playing on a bigger stage is exactly what Mayo needed. Maybe Cuban`s right.

He better hope he`s right if he plans on keeping Dirk Nowitzki happy
