If you`ve never heard of Turkmenistan, you`re not alone. But it`s one of the few places in the world where you can see a flaming crater like the one above located in their Karakum Desert. According to the below site, "Measuring 230 feet across and almost 70 feet deep, the so-called Door to Hell has been burning continuously since Soviet scientists lit it on fire in 1971. " Pretty unnatural, and would be interesting to see in person. But I can`t imagine much else to see in Turkmenistan.
So just where is their former Soviet controlled country? It borders the Caspian sea as well as Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, and Iran. Yes more countries rarely visited by Americans. =)
