These here are Jamaican Fried Dumplings also known as Johnny Cakes. It is essentially a form of a biscuit which is fried. They`re made with flour, salt, water and baking soda. The dough is kneaded and round dough balls formed then fried in a relatively shallow pan of oil. These aren`t only a breakfast item, they can be eaten anytime of the day, along with any meal. But in my personal experience, these have typically been something we have with breakfast as the boiled version is something that I enjoy more-so and prefer. You can eat these fried dumplings plain as they are, split with butter on them, jam/jelly, or you can even put eggs, meat, etc., on them. I typically eat them either plan or split with butter on them.
I did not make this particular batch. My aunt who was down visiting made these and I swear she makes the best fried dumplings.
Have you ever tried Jamaican food before?
