I recently went to a local indie theater to watch the new drama fantasy Beasts of the Southern Wild . The unique story line intrigued me and it was indeed worth a watch. Before I go into a review, I want to share the plot summary.
As taken from IMDB,
Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink`s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he`s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink`s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.
First and foremost, the main character, Hushpuppy, is played by one of the more incredible child actors I`ve seen in a while. I can`t say enough of how well acted and real the movie felt because of her superb character performance. If you like original story lines, you`d probably enjoy this fantasy creation. And even though it had fantasia elements, the film itself felt very real and true to life. I never really pay attention to music in films, but all my friends were saying how great the music incorporated was in the film. Also, being an independent film, it was beautifully shot with stunning visuals and cinematography. The script didn`t fail me as well as I found it to be all quite thought provoking and funny at parts for sure. If you`re a fan of this type of film, I would surely recommend to go see it at your local indie film theaters! It`s one of those movies you get lost in, with a warm fuzzy feeling as you`re drifted away in a different world...
