Red velvet desserts are such a trend, and it looks like they have expanded to the pancake department.
On a recent trip south of the border, I went to I hop with some friends and ended up ordering some red velvet pancakes. These pancakes are essentially a red velvet batter topped with a sweet icing, powdered sugar and whipped cream.
While I like red velvet, I don`t think it really does anything to enhance the flavour of the dessert. Red Velvet is essentially just chocolate with red food colouring. Originally, they used to add beet juice to make the cake moist, which would give it the signature red colour, but these days, it`s just food colouring!
These pancakes ended up being far to sweet for my taste. I didn`t even add any syrup and they were still super sweet and rich. It was definitely like a dessert dish.
I think I will stick to regular pancakes, or my favourite - chocolate chip, next time!
