I do childcare and in my course we do little courses to get us other qualifications and one of the other courses we do wit it is an arts and crafts course. We had to design and make a child toy and the age range I aimed it at was babies. I decided to make a winter themed play mat. I bought a blanket (blue with white polka dots) and separated it into 6 sections useing ribbon. I am hand sewing everything which is time consuming but I think it will be more personal. I am doing the sections one at a time.
I cut out a tree template and used it to create a tree in green felt. I sewed it onto the blanket. I then cut abit of brown fabric for the trunk. I found a textured brown fabric that gave the effect of tree bark so I thought it was perfect for this. It was a fabric sample from next. I then cut a template on a plant pot and then used that to create a red plantpot on felt but you can use whatever colour you want. I sewed the tree trunk and thee plant pot both on then sewed a jewel on the top to look like the star. To finish it off I bought some little bells from `The Works` which I then sewed on too look like baubles. This section of the play mat it sensory as it has different fabric textures (touch) and also bells (sound).
I am really happy with this section of my playmat and will keep you up to date with how the other sections go and how to do them.
