Its the year of the dragon this year! I hope everyone had a good chinese new years with their families!!! I know I did. During the weekend we were so busy cleaning the house and whatnot. After that was all done, I decided to make Nian Gao and Bak Tong Go (sweet sticky rice cakes). The Nian Gao is the brown sticky cake in the picture and the white sticky cake is the Bak Tong Go. My mom previously taught me how to make Nian Gao. But I had to do research online to find the perfect recipe for Bak Tong Go.
This was my first attempt to making both. I wanted to keep the tradition going and I wanted to make my family happy, so I went ahead and made them. The Nian Gao turned out perfectly; it wasn`t super sticky nor super sweet. The texture was perfect and the taste was delicious. I know that some people pan fry their Nian Gao with eggs afterwards (which is also very delicious), but I wanted to keep mine simple. My Bak Tong Go turned out good to, but not as sweet as I expected it to be. It tasted like store bought ones, but not exactly. I`m missing something and I`m still working on it. I`ve attempted to make two other Bak Tong Go but those failed, my first one turned out the best (and eatable, lol). Does anyone know a good recipe for Bak Tong Go? It took over 3-4 hours making these both! It takes a lot of patience to make these, it was worth the wait.
