Joining a gym can be a difficult decision. Where to join, what to do once you have joined, and why to join are all important factors of making this decision. I joined a gym about 8 weeks ago, and it has made a world of difference. Here are my tips!
- Explore all the options in your town. Go to their websites and learn more about each gym before joining. If you have specific interests, make sure to see if your potential gym can cater to them. For example, if you are interested in taking fitness classes, make sure your gym offers the ones you want.
- Take a tour! The gym I joined, my local YMCA, offered a tour that helped solidify my decision. You can check out the locker rooms, facilities, and even get an idea of the people who already work out there.
-See if your gym offers guest passes so you can try their facilities before making a final decision! Doing this gives you all the perks of being a real member, without having to make a decision right away. Also, ask any friends or family members who are gym members if they have any guest passes.
(Disclaimer: I am in now way a professional. I`m just saying what has worked best in my experience.)
So I joined.... What do I do now?:
- Don`t be afraid to try new things. At first, I was hesitant to take any classes. I was afraid it would be awkward and just an overall uncomfortable experience. But after trying my first Zumba class, I was locked in! Remember, you are at the gym to better your health, just like everyone else! Don`t be embarrassed to take an out-there class. Just have fun!
-Don`t be intimidated by the weight room. Yes, even at the YMCA, their can be some intimidating people working out in there. But, if you walk in and workout just like everyone else, it really isn`t a big deal. Weight training is a great way to get in shape; it won`t make you bulky, but will sculpt your body so you look lean!
-If you are really lost, see if you can have a gym orientation, where a trainer takes you around the gym and explains how to use each machine and why you should use it.
Why join a gym?:
-Being at a gym is motivating. You are surrounded by people who are working out, just like you.
-While you are at the gym, your only option is to work out. Although I have a treadmill and some weights at home, I had a hard time staying motivated. There were so many other distractions that kept me from working out. Some people say it doesn`t make sense to drive to a gym to run, for me at least, it is the best way to ensure I follow through with my workouts.
- You will get access to so much equipment! Treadmills, ellipticals, assisted lifting machines, even a pool! Your gym holds so many options for getting in shape.
I hope these tips have helped! I`m so glad that I joined my gym. :)
