Göreme is a small town located in the historical region of Cappadocia, in Turkey. The eruption of Mount Erciyes about 2000 years ago left the region under mounds of ash and lava, which eventually formed soft rocks. Through time, the rocks were eroded by wind and water, and became the fairy chimneys, of which we know today. The people of Göreme carved into these soft rocks to form houses, churches, and monasteries, of which the largest church in the district is the Tokal Kilise. One of the best ways to see Göreme is by hot air balloon!
