I just read this article about a couple who decided to conceal their child`s gender until he was 5 years old (they had to for him to be admitted in school). They claimed that by doing so, their child will be protected from gender stereotyping. So the child was never only given girls toys or boys toys, but both. He was allowed to wear dresses, play with dolls, wear children makeup, wear jewelery, play with GI Jo toys or cars. Whatever he liked. But he never understood the difference between a boy and a girl. Although I think it`s a good thing for him to play with whatever he wanted, but it is just wrong not to let him know that he`s a boy and not a girl. I know his parents did it for good reasons, by protecting him from a sexist society. But then, at the same time, what they did is deprive him from any education or preparations to deal with a sexist society. I hope he won`t get mocked if he decides to dress as a girl one day at school, but that is almost inevitable.
What`s your opinion on that?
