In China in 1937, during the Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John (Christian Bale) arrives at a Catholic church in Nanjing to prepare a priest for burial. He finds himself the lone adult among a group of convent girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel. He ends up having to be the protector of these girls and women from the horrors of the invading Japanese army.
I found this movie to be really good, yet very disturbing. There were a lot of grotesque and horrifying scenes of murder and rape, so if this type of thing bothers you, I wouldn`t recommend it. I was entertained by the movie because it was based on a true story and I really felt compassion for these people, but at the same time I kind of wish I hadn`t seen the disgusting behavior that happens during war. Just a warning if you are sensitive to these types of scenes, but it is a really good movie.
