Fine Dining Dinner: Pangaea Restaurant

Every Summer and Winter in Toronto, various fine dining restaurants participate in Summerlicious/Winterlicious where they offer a small selection of 3 course dinners ranging from $25-$45. Most restaurants also offer lunch for $15-$35

Last night I went to Pangaea restaurant for $35 dinner and just wanted to share some thoughts. The meal also comes with bread and some beet spread which was yums.

The mussels were NOT part of the Winterlicious menu and were $3 each. My bf decided to get them since I haven`t actually tried them before. Im not sure how reliable my opinion on these will be, but it came with some horse raddish, lemon and this red sauce and it all tasted really sour-ish but i think thats how its supposed to taste.

For appetizers, we ordered the fried calamari with chipotle and lime aioli dipping sauce, and the smoked duck with "celeriac remoulade" which just tasted like coleslaw. They were both pretty good and are actually on their regular menu.

For my main course, I got the grilled bison striploin with sweet potato puree and it came with a few pieces of mushrooms. It was ok, I expected more, especially flavor-wise but i guess that`s what the wine sauce was for. It also came with literally 2 small slices of striploin which made it not very filling.

My bf ordered the slow braised pork shoulder (1st pic) with some barley which was much better than my striploin and also on their regular menu. The meat was SO tender and juicy. Also it seemed a little more filling than the dish I ordered cause of the barley but it was kinda salty imo.

For desert, we had the ontario cheese plate, and pumkpin spice bread pudding.
The cheese plate was SO GOOD. Best part of my meal. It came with 3 cheeses, I only remember that the middle was goat cheese (my fave) and the last was some type of blue cheese. It also came with some diced pear thingy a drop of honey and some crispy bread things.
I`ve never tried bread pudding before this and I don`t think I will again. It probably has more to do with my personal taste than the restaurant, because the taste and texture is like some cake you can buy at the grocery store with some subtle sweet/spicy flavor.

Overall, I think this restaurant is fun to try and if the braised pork is a true reflection of the food, its actually pretty good. BUT its kind of overpriced for the insanely small portions you get. Don`t expect to be really full if you come to this restaurant for the "licious" menus. We actually went out for some chinese food after haha.
