More than just a book about a cow
Based on the cover and size of the book, one may think Sean Kenniffs book is a quirky childrens story, but its not. Its so much more than it appears to be, in fact, its rather thought-provoking and emotional.
The protagonist is a bull who calls himself Être. Hes not like the other cattle, somehow hes become self-aware. Unfortunately, he cannot communicate with the other cows, nor with the humans that run the ranch he lives on, making him feel very alone.
The story is about Être trying to find love, freedom, and the meaning of life. Être may be a bull, but his plight is very human. Im sure many people feel like they cant control their lives or communicate with the people around them what theyre truly feeling.
The ideas brought up by the book are thought-provoking. At one point, I was thinking maybe life would have been easier for Être if he had been just like the other bulls. Also, that life for domesticated animals seems quite sad. The author includes many discussion questions at the end of the story, to get readers thinking more deeply about the possible meanings of Êtres life.
Overall, I would recommend this book.
