When "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" premiered three and a half years ago, the cable reality show about a blended family -- including OJ Simpson`s lawyer`s ex-wife, her new, former Olympian husband, and a bunch of not-exactly-A-list daughters -- didn`t seem like it was necessarily a million-dollar idea. Turns out it was a $65-million-dollar idea. Since the series debuted, not only have the Kardashians and their significant others become household names, but sisters Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe now have four TV shows, two perfumes, multiple ad campaigns, and a chain of boutiques between them, which adds up to an estimated $65 million a year. So to those who say the Kardashians are just a bunch of socialites who`ve become famous for being famous, 55-year-old matriarch Kris Jenner has a response.
"It`s annoying when I hear, `What do your girls do?` Well, first of all, all of my daughters have jobs. They are fashion stylists and designers; they own a chain of stores. They had the stores before they had the show. And my kids worked from the time they were 13 years old. So to me, that`s a huge misconception -- that the girls don`t work. They work 25 hours a day," she tells Redbook as part of a family interview for the magazine`s May issue. "And that they don`t have any talent? They might not be singers or dancers, but they certainly know how to produce a television show. Whether you want to call it talent or not, they have multiple shows on the air. [I want to say,] `How many shows do you have?`"
Though having TV cameras follow you everywhere you go (even to the bedroom) seems like it would get old fast, all of the Kardashian women insist they have no problem living their lives in front of the whole world, and what viewers see is what they get. "There`s nothing I`m really ashamed of, and I work hard on the show and all my other projects," says 30-year-old Kim. "I don`t drink or do drugs, so I`m comfortable showing the world what my life is all about."
But they also admit there`s a downside. For eldest sister Kourtney, who has a 15-month-old son Mason -- and an often rocky relationship -- with boyfriend Scott Disick, that downside can be fans` assumption that they know exactly what she wants. "Once Scott and I were in New York, and someone screamed, `Oh, Kourtney, I love you ... Scott, I hate you!` People think that`s what I want to hear, that they`re on my side. And I`m like, `Nooo, that`s the father of my child,`" she recalls. "Kim says people come up to her all the time and say, `Oh, I hate Scott,` and she`ll say, `How dare you talk about him that way!` It took a lot for Scott and me not to care about other people`s opinions."
As for 26-year-old Khloe, who married L.A. Lakers star Lamar Odom in 2009 (the couple`s own reality series, "Khloe & Lamar," premieres April 10), she`s had to work on getting past the public`s interest in her life ... and weight. "No one can prepare you for that kind of media scrutiny -- millions of people feeling like they have the right to tell you if you`re too fat or too skinny or too tall or too this or too that. I`ve been compared to my sisters my whole life, but my mom has always said, `You`re the tall one, and everyone loves to be tall,`" explains Khloe, who is 5`10" and towers over sisters Kim and Kourtney, who are 5`2" and 5` respectively. "My husband is so obsessed with my body; he loves it. He thinks my curves are womanly. Do I have days where my weight issues eat away at me and I get depressed? Of course. But they don`t last long. I`m not perfect. Just because I`m on TV, people think that I have 24/7 access to trainers and nutritionists. Oftentimes I don`t have the time or want to spend the money to do all that."
And while the Odoms may be ready to have a baby, perpetual pregnancy rumors can be stressful, too. "It`s crazy. And I almost feel like I disappoint people when I don`t announce I`m pregnant. I`m like, `Stop with all the pressure.` I find it very flattering that people care so much, and I want a baby, too, but it has to happen when it`s time, and it`s in God`s hands," she says. "I`m young; I`m 26, and I`ve only been married a year and a half. And it`s not that we`re not trying to have a baby -- it`s just that we don`t want to time it and take the fun out of it."
Kim -- who`s dating NBA player Kris Humphries (like sister, like sister!) -- has motherhood on the brain as well. "Definitely three or four kids," she reveals. "If you asked me earlier, I would have said five or six. But I`d have to start now. It would help to have a husband first!"
