I picked up this slice of cake from a local bakery cafe over the weekend. It was a vanilla layer cake with lavender and buttercream frosting, and some lemon curd. I know that lavender seems like an odd flavour to put in a cake, but it was actually really mild. I only tasted a hint of lavender in the purple dollop of buttercream frosting on top of the cake. The rest of the dessert tasted purely of lemon. I actually would have liked it if it tasted *more* like lavender!
If you`ve never tried lavender before, it has a bit of an herbal taste to it, but it isn`t overly bitter. It actually goes really well with lemon, and tastes good when baked into sweets in general. This cake was great, and I did like the hint of lavender it provided (though I would have liked there to be more if it, as I already stated). The cake itself was moist, and the buttercream wasn`t too sweet. The curd on the op layer of the cake was nice and tangy, as well. You could tell it was made from fresh lemon juice! All in all, it was a great dessert. :)
