A popular type of face cream for those with sun spots or discolorations is brightening creams. These have ingredients which, if placed on dark skin spots will eventually help to fade the spot. They have been popular since the early 1900s and before 1970 they would contain mercury to produce the lightening effect. After 1976, the use of mercury was banned. Even though it was banned, products are being produced in places where regulations aren`t kept as well as in England and the U.S. Also, other names for mercury are used to help these products fly under the radar. Please be careful if you are use a product labeled as brightening or lightening. Do your research and make sure mercury isn`t anywhere in the ingredients! The images above are just a sampling of products that have been found to have mercury.
