This is the year Ive decided to make a commitment and only purchase cruelty free beauty products. Its been a long time coming, something Ive considered doing since I discovered Josie Marans line of products. So goodbye Maybelline, goodbye LOreal USA. (One of the first steps in going cruelty free, whether its beauty products or other consumer goods, is avoiding products under large corporations like LOreal, Coty, Clorox, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever.) A really great resource for information on cruelty free companies is on PETAs website. http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/companies/default.aspx, you can find a comprehensive list of companies that do and do not test on animals. While browsing the site, I found a way to receive free information from PETA by mail. You receive a shopping guide (a compiled list of cruelty free beauty companies), information on charities that do and do not fund animal testing, general information on animal testing, some cute stickers, information on cruelty free pet food companies, and how to receive vegetarian/vegan starter kit (which I plan to do!). If youre interested in receiving this same information, go http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/order-cruelty-free-shopping-guide.aspx! Its really simple and you cant opt out of receiving e-mails from PETA when you sign up. I received my info in just a couple of weeks. After doing some research, I was extremely happy to find out how many wonderful brands and companies do not test on animals and I dont feel Im going to miss out by going cruelty free. Revlon, Wet N Wild, NYX, Tarte there are so many great beauty companies who are committed to being cruelty free! However, it can get a little complicated. For example, there are many brands that dont test on animals, but these brands may be owned by a company that does (e.g. The Body Shop was purchased by LOreal and Burts Bees has been bought by Clorox). At this early stage in my journey, Im willing to purchase from these brands and let my money show what Im interested in as a consumer. I hope you found this helpful and possibly got you thinking about the beauty products we are buying! *Photos and words are my own!
